When the kids and pets head into the backyard to play, you want them to be safe. Every summer, children and pets are injured because of unsafe conditions on decks. Avoid accidents by learning how to create a safer deck for your loved ones.

The Need to Create a Safer Deck

Ideally, your deck provides your family with a safe, clean area to play and enjoy being outdoors. However, injuries occur because of the condition of the deck or hazardous items that may be stored there. Here are some steps you can take to create a safer deck.

1. Inspect Your Deck Seasonally

Because your deck is exposed to the elements, issues like rotting or splintering boards and protruding nails are common. Some boards may bow upward and create a tripping hazard. Over time, the wood may weaken due to age or a termite infestation. Even new decks may have damage from construction deficiencies. Each season, spend a few minutes inspecting each board for hazards.

2. Check the Deck Railing

Just as the surface of the deck may have defects that lead to injuries, railings can also pose a risk. Railings and their balusters loosen or weaken over time. The purpose of the railing is to keep people and pets safely on the deck, and the railing cannot do its job when it is in poor condition. Loose railings or balusters are hazards that should be addressed to create a safer deck.

3. Create a Safer Deck by Illuminating the Space

Anyone who uses your deck in the evenings can bump into objects, trip down the stairs, or run into the railings if the area is not properly illuminated. A single patio light may not provide sufficient lighting. Install lights that illuminate the space from several different angles. Direct light should fall on the deck’s staircase, too.

4. Be Aware of Dangerous Items

Even when your deck is in excellent condition and is well-lit, objects on the deck can be dangerous to your children and pets. They may touch a hot grill or get into lighter fluid or other chemicals. Toxic plants and sharp tools are other dangers that may be on your deck. Before allowing kids or pets outdoors, scan the area for any hazardous items and remove them.

These are some of the ways that you can create a safer deck to enjoy in the warmer months. Inspect your deck and identify risks so that your property is a safe place for your loved ones to be.
